Selfie Ban at Miranda House: Defense or Discrimination

Miranda House is one of the top Delhi University women’s college in Delhi. The college is in the news after a notice warning the part-time students has been in circulation.

The notice warned the students against clicking selfies, combing their hair or “modeling” in the campus premises. The Selfie Ban at Miranda House has created waves of frustration and disappointment among the students.

The Incognito Circular

The unsigned notice, in circulation from the month of November last year, points out only the SOL students. The part-time students attend the classes only on Sundays and other college holidays.

They have been restricted from clicking selfies or brushing their hair within the college campus. The notice also states that any student mis-utilizing their time in campus shall face suspension for the rest of the day.

The College’s Defence

The principal of Miranda House, Pratibha Jolly, defended the notice by calling it a safety move. She also said that the notice was not an ultimatum but a gentle advisory.

“You could see students hanging from ledges, pillars, and parapets, taking pictures. You could see it happen in an organized manner where students would go to a different location and shoot portfolios. Not just one selfie or two.”

The take on why only School Of Open Learning!

Krantikari Yuva Sanghatan, a student union organization within SOL, has opposed the decision. They call it ‘misogynistic attitude’ of the authorities.

The KYS seeks from the authorities as to why only School Of Open Learning students have been told to abide by the order and not the regular students. They have also claimed to move Delhi Commission for Women against this dictatorship.

The authorities at Miranda house, however, claim that the notice had been put up just to ‘petrify’ the students who are not as easily accessible as the full-time students.

They say that the regular students are busy in engaging activities throughout the day and are easily reachable. On the other hand, it is important to reach out to the students of SOL as they are do not directly form a part of the college.

Selfie Ban at Miranda HouseThe Student Retaliates!

The students are angry over the line of events and have been holding protests. There have been several protests by students who brought combs to the venue. In fact, they shouted slogans in front of the college premises for the removal of the ban.

The students want to know what harm would it do if they take a selfie of two while waiting for the classes. Furthermore, the students have also threatened to approach DCW over the issue.

A Discrimination?

The President of the Women’s Development cell in Miranda House, Ishani Banerjee also commented on the issue: ‘I’m hanging around college all the time. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone penalized for this. In fact, this has not been an issue at all so far.’

Meanwhile, the student union does feel that the notice only being issued for the students of School Of Open Learning is a tad bit strange.

Furthermore, the principal was quoted by the Telegraph as saying, “This is the most progressive college, with western dance and performing arts practice that go on till 8:30 pm, without anyone objecting. The notice was put out only because things are going out of hand.”

‘TheFractions’ Speaks

TheFractions requests the faculty and administration at Miranda House and Delhi University to monitor this matter closely. Moreover, this unnecessary discrimination is disturbing and strange at the same time. All in all, the authorities should look upon every student legitimately and parallelly. Such instances will leave a mark of disappointment among the students at large. Measures should be taken to ensure that the students do not feel humiliated and distraught by such a decision.
